52-year-old Dawn West is still playing the trumpet in the West Virginia University marching band all these years later. In her interview, Dawn recalls that being in the college marching band was the most amazing time of her life.
Dawn had always been smitten with the marching band. In high school she saved up her babysitting money to buy a trumpet in order to make it into the band. She even taught herself to play in her spare time so she could keep up with everyone else. When she went off to college it was a no-brainer for her to choose a college with an amazing marching band. Dawn entered into the West Virginia Marching band 35 years ago and has never left. She even took classes she didn't need so she could stay in the band.
After a few years, the college decided to let her stay in the band indefinitely without having to take anymore unneeded classes. The college kids call her "grandma" even though she was never married and has no kids. She gets along great with all of the kids and they enjoy her company so much. What an amazing story! Dawn is such a great example for us to never stop doing what we truly love despite our age!
